Sakau/Kava Project – the Idea

The spark to grow sakau/kava on our ranch ignited from the vibrant tales of our Pohnpei Hilo Ohanas! Growing up, I was always tied to my roots, which shaped my fun choices.

The vibrant traditions of my childhood filled my heart with a longing to reconnect with my heritage.

Hearing their stories and joining in the laughter during those cozy evening kava circles had me pondering: why not plant some on my ranch for our cultural events? My passion for our traditions made me determined to keep this delightful part of our culture alive! I gave it a whirl a few times, but let’s just say I had some epic fails! However, as I nurtured more plants, I discovered what makes them thrive and what makes them pout.

As I poured my energy into developing my green thumb, I realized my mistakes were simply stepping stones on the path to success.
Through my goofy experiments, I learned the magic of soil and water management in growing these fabulous roots.
