Reflecting on Our Eden Roc Off-Grid Journey Since Day One
When you look at a thriving off-grid homestead, it’s easy to get caught up in the final picture—the solar panels catching the sun, the lush crops ready for harvest, and a comfortable roof over your head. But every single empire has a starting line. For our family, that line was drawn on October 10th, 2023, in the Eden Roc subdivision of Hawaii.
That was the exact day we laid the foundation for our very first structure: a compact, highly efficient $6\times12$ foot home.
But what many people don’t know is that the hardest part of that day wasn’t clearing the brush or pouring the concrete. The hardest part was fighting through the wall of negative noise that almost stopped me from ever pulling the trigger.
Battling the “Noise” of the Skeptics
When I first announced that I was investing in Eden Roc, the critics came out of the woodwork. I had relatives and onlookers telling me left and right how bad of an area it was, how dangerous it was, and why my purchase was a massive mistake. They filled my ears with horror stories and doubts.
I’ll be honest: it scared the heck out of me. When people you know and care about are telling you that you are throwing your money away, it shakes your confidence. It makes you sit up at night wondering if you’re making a blind mistake. But deep down, I knew the vision. I knew that if you want to build true, independent wealth, you can’t let other people’s fears dictate your family’s future. I managed to push past the fear, block out the background noise, and put the hammer to the rock anyway.
Today, looking back, I am so incredibly blessed that I made that jump. All those terrifying things the skeptics warned me about? I have seen absolutely nothing of them. The noise was just talk. The reality has been a pure blessing.
Starting Small: Why 6×12 Was the Smartest Move
We took a calculated approach to prove the doubters wrong: we started small so we could own our progress free and clear. A 6×12 structure is small enough to build quickly with a tight crew, keeping overhead at absolute zero.
It gave us an immediate, secure home base on the island—a place to lock up tools, catch rainwater, and lay our heads down after a long day of work. By mastering that small footprint first, we learned the unique patterns of the land without the pressure of a massive debt load hanging over our heads.
The Evolution: From a Tiny Footprint to a Thriving Ecosystem
Since that October morning in 2023, the momentum has never stopped. What started as a single tiny foundation born out of a leap of faith has evolved into a massive, self-sustaining family engine:
-
The Power Grid: We upgraded from a mere 3,000-watt solar setup to a robust 9,000-watt powerhouse system. Today, it effortlessly powers everything from our refrigerator and deep freezer to the cooking range, the water pump, and everything in between. We aren’t just off the grid; we own our own modern utility company.
-
The Footprint Expansion: That initial, humble 6×12 tool shack foundation gave us the experience, confidence, and infrastructure needed to expand our living space into a beautiful residence over 1,000 square feet.
-
The Food Forest: We transformed what was once a wild, dense forest of invasive Chinese Guava, Hawaiian Ferns, and Ohia trees into a highly productive agricultural asset. Today, the land boasts a wealth of taro, sweet potatoes, bananas, and chayote.
-
The Farm Crew: The land doesn’t just sustain us—it sustains a whole backyard economy. Our homestead is now home to a cat, two loyal dogs, and a thriving group of pigs and piglets that are fed directly from the abundance of our crops.
-
The Reward on the Plate: Best of all, when you pair that fresh island food harvested right from the dirt with the fresh catch of the day straight from the ocean, it completes an absolutely awesome plate. You can’t buy that kind of organic, rich lifestyle in a corporate grocery store—it has to be earned.
Every single upgrade was paid for out of pocket and built with our own hands, keeping our resources locked tight inside the family canoe.
The Lesson: Block Out the Noise and Build
If you are sitting on the sidelines wondering how to start your own journey toward freedom, the lesson from our Eden Roc experience is simple: you have to stop listening to the crowd. People who have never built an asset will always tell you why your asset will fail.
Buy the raw land cash, step onto the dirt, close your ears to the critics, and start with a footprint you can control. Once that first foundation is set, the fear disappears, and the blessings take over.
We started with a tiny 6×12 space in the middle of a storm of doubt on October 10th, 2023. Today, we stand on a 9,000-watt foundation of true independence. If our crew can push past the noise, your crew can too.
