Newly Weds Jaylino & Tansy Brought the Crowd and Connecting Family Dots

Newly Weds Jaylino & Tansy Brought the Crowd and Connecting Family Dots

There is an old truth known to ocean people: the water never truly separates us; it only connects us. No matter how far we wander into the Diaspora, our island spirits and ancestors have a way of mapping out our paths, ensuring we always find our way back to family.

Yesterday, a beautiful Saturday wedding right here in Hawaii became a grand reunion for the Remathau Ohana—complete with sacred hymns, high-energy dancing, a heavy dose of island humor, and a deep, shared remembrance of a fallen legend.

A Church Full of Song (and a Captain’s Order)

The day began with a beautiful, soul-stirring mass. For those of us living far from the shores of our home islands, there is nothing quite like the sound of our traditional religious songs and hymns echoing through a church. It completely filled the room and touched every heart present.

But weddings can make a groom nervous, and our boy Jaylino was looking a little too serious up there at the altar. Seeing him like that, I knew I had to step in and handle business right from the pews. As his captain, I yelled out across the church: “Smile Jaylino, smile!”

Right on cue, someone else chimed in and added, “It’s a day to be happy!”

Hehehe! 😂 You should have seen how fast the mood brightened up. Jaylino cracked a massive grin, and suddenly everyone in the church was smiling a whole lot wider. Hey, when the blessings are flowing like that, sometimes a captain just has to give a direct order to let the joy out!

The Ultimate Remathau Family Tree Twist

But the absolute highlight of the day was a realization that hit me mid-celebration. I was looking at the beautiful bride, Tansy, tracing the faces in the crowd, when the dots finally connected in my head.

Now, if you know our Remathau culture, you know we don’t use Western labels like “cousins.” We don’t divide our blood that way—we are all brothers and sisters, plain and simple. Her mom and my dad are brother and sister, which means Tansy is truly a sister of mine. To make it even more powerful, her great-great-grandparents were rooted in Ifalik.

Seeing those deep ancestral roots bloom right here in the middle of the Pacific generations later was incredible. And I have to say to my sister Tansy: you got a truly spectacular catch right here. Jaylino has passed the ultimate test of a true Ifalikese—and that is being the best fisherman.

I know this firsthand because he’s one of our fishing buddies. I’ve seen him out there in the depth of the Laupahoehoe ocean shores, taking out my new 28-footer and catching pa’ate, moana, and kalekale. The man knows the ocean! 🎣🌊

A Special Connection: Meeting Jessica in the Crowd

After the mass, we gathered at the beautiful Wailoa Park, taking over the largest pavilion for the celebration. Family poured in from every corner of the Hawaiian Islands, and I was so excited to look around and see an incredible crowd of aunties, uncles, brothers, and sisters—some I hadn’t seen in years, and others connected to us by the long threads of our history.

Among the amazing crowd gathering at the pavilion, there was one young woman I knew I had to find. As soon as I heard that Jessica was there, I immediately went looking for her.

When we finally met up, it brought back a flood of powerful memories—memories of my own wedding day and of her parents. Her dad was my witness for my wedding vows back in Pohnpei, and he was a deeply trusted advisor to me. Bless his soul in heaven. The talks we had and the life advice he gave me all those years ago are still etched within my very being.

In fact, he actually advised me against getting married at the time! He compared me to a free white dove, warning me that getting married was like a dove being shot right out of the sky. Hehehe! 😂 But even with that direct advice, he loved me enough to support me anyway—he was right there willing and proud to stand as the witness to my vows.

Meeting Jess for the very first time after so many years away from home was incredibly emotional. I just knew, looking at her, that her dad was looking down from heaven, laughing and very happy to see us finally reconnecting out here yesterday. 🕊️✨

A Grand Entrance at Wailoa Park

With the pavilion full of reconnected family and the energy high, the moment everyone was waiting for arrived: the newlyweds made their appearance.

The welcoming dance took place right outside, where the crowd formed two long, beautiful lines. In true, proud Remathau style, Jaylino and Tansy had to walk through those lines as everyone danced, cheered, and chanted to welcome them. The rhythm, the movement, and the voices brought the spirit of the islands straight onto the grass. It was pure, unadulterated island joy.

Honoring a Legend: Master Navigator Sesario Sewralur

Yet, even in our highest moments of celebration, a true Remathau never forgets those who mapped the ways before us. Beneath the joy of the reception was a deep, quiet sorrow for the recent passing of our dear friend, brother, island mate, and iconic cultural anchor, Master Navigator Sesario Sewralur.

He was a giant of our people, a man who carried the ancient knowledge of the stars and waves. We held space for his memory, honoring his life and lifting up his family in prayer both during the sacred mass and amidst the celebrations at the pavilion. His legacy was a quiet presence with us, reminding us of the strength of our identity.

Mahalo Nui Loa

Thank you, Jaylino and Tansy, for being the reason our people gathered. Thank you for the music, the chants, the laughter, and the beautiful reminder that no matter where the winds of life blow us, the Remathau Ohana remains one.

With the Lord as your compass, your voyage together will never lose its way. In this marriage, when one falters, the other forgives; when one is weak, the other stands strong. May your journey together be blessed with smooth seas, clear skies, and a lifetime of happiness anchored in love! ✨🌴
