Raising Pigs in Puna: A Journey of Purpose and Connection
In January 2025, the adventure of raising pigs in Puna began with a single pig from neighbors Marcy and Ohana, just a few streets away. What started as a simple curiosity quickly grew into a meaningful part of life on the farm. Over time, more pigs joined the pen, and just this past week, one of them gave birth—marking a new chapter in this growing journey.
From Curiosity to Commitment
The first pig was meant to bring a bit of fun and life to the farm. But as the days turned into months, it became clear that pigs play a much deeper role in the ecosystem. Their presence transformed the land, enriching the soil and supporting the growth of banana trees and other crops. The connection between the animals and the land revealed itself as a natural cycle—one that sustains both the farm and the farmer.
Building a Balanced Farm System
The relationship between the pigs and the farm is beautifully reciprocal. Local farms often share leftover produce and feed, ensuring the pigs are well-nourished. In return, the pigs contribute rich manure that revitalizes the soil, creating a self-sustaining system. This balance between giving and receiving mirrors the spirit of community that defines life in Puna.
A Deeper Meaning Through Giving
The first pig raised on the farm was donated for an important family event. That moment brought a profound realization: raising pigs is not just about farming—it’s about connection, tradition, and giving back. Soon after, another pig was donated to the Remathau of Hilo Ohana, deepening the sense of purpose and belonging. These experiences turned what began as a hobby into a heartfelt commitment to family, culture, and community.
Expanding the Herd
Recently, a Duroc pig was added from Marcy, joining the Hampshire pigs already on the farm. The mix of breeds brings diversity and strength to the herd, each with unique traits that contribute to the farm’s growth. Watching them thrive under the Puna sun, surrounded by lush greenery and volcanic soil, is a reminder of how life flourishes when nurtured with care and intention.
Welcoming the Piglets
With the recent birth of piglets, the farm has entered an exciting new stage. A few of the piglets will be sold, while the rest will stay to help sustain the farm and offset feeding costs. The piglets are expected to be ready for pick-up around mid to late April. Those interested in purchasing are welcome to reach out for more details. Mahalo for the continued support and encouragement—it truly keeps the farm thriving.
The Heart of Puna Farming
Raising pigs in Puna is more than an agricultural pursuit—it’s a way of life rooted in respect for the land, the animals, and the people who share in its abundance. Each pig, each harvest, and each act of giving strengthens the bond between the farm and the community.
What began as a simple idea has become a living system of sustainability, generosity, and gratitude—a reflection of what makes Puna such a special place to call home.
