A Well-Deserved Family Getaway to Treasure Island, Florida

After weeks of hard work transforming the front yard of our new home into something truly our own, a family getaway was exactly what was needed. The long days of digging, planting, and designing had been rewarding, but the idea of taking a break to unwind and reconnect as a family sounded even better.

So, my wife, our youngest son, and I packed our bags and headed to sunny Florida for a well-deserved vacation.

Arriving at Treasure Island

Our destination was Treasure Island, a beautiful stretch of beach on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The moment we arrived, the salty breeze and the sound of waves instantly set the tone for relaxation. We checked into a Marriott right on the beach, and one of the first things that caught my attention was that the hotel lobby was on the second floor. At first, it seemed unusual, but it soon made perfect sense—being so close to the ocean, the hotel was built on posts to protect it from high tides and flooding. It was a clever design that added to the coastal charm of the place.

As we checked in, one of the hotel staff members smiled and told us we had picked the perfect time to visit Florida. It wasn’t spring break season, so the beaches were calm and peaceful, and the usual problem of dead fish washing up on shore was nowhere to be seen. The timing couldn’t have been better—quiet beaches, clear water, and a relaxed atmosphere made it feel like our own private paradise.

Settling In and Soaking Up the Sun

From our room, the view was breathtaking. The turquoise water stretched endlessly, and the sunsets painted the sky in shades of orange and pink. Each morning began with the sound of waves gently rolling onto the shore, and each evening ended with a peaceful walk along the beach. It was the kind of calm that only the ocean can bring.

Our days were filled with simple joys—building sandcastles with our son, collecting seashells, and watching pelicans dive for fish. The warmth of the Florida sun and the laughter of our little one made every moment feel special.

A Taste of Home Away from Home

One of the highlights of the trip was discovering a local restaurant that served Caribbean Rice. The dish immediately reminded us of home—it was rice cooked with coconut meat, just like the ones we used to enjoy back in Micronesia. The familiar flavor brought a wave of nostalgia and comfort, connecting our island roots to this new coastal experience.

Reconnecting with Family

Another meaningful part of the trip was being able to see family members who live in Florida. Spending time with my sisters, my uncle, and my nephews and nieces added so much value to the vacation. Sharing stories, laughter, and meals together made the trip even more memorable. It was a reminder of how important family connections are, especially when living far from home. Those moments of togetherness made the trip feel complete.

Reflecting on the Journey

This trip to Florida was more than just a vacation; it was a chance to pause, breathe, and appreciate how far we’ve come. From settling into our new home to creating a space that reflects who we are, and now taking time to rest and recharge—it all felt like part of a bigger journey.

Treasure Island lived up to its name, not just for its beauty, but for the memories we created there. It reminded us that after hard work, it’s important to take time to enjoy life’s simple treasures—family, nature, and the feeling of home, no matter where the waves take us.
