This morning, we departed for Wailoa Harbor in Hilo after postponing yesterday’s journey due to issues with our radar system, which, interestingly, stemmed from operator error. Following thorough troubleshooting, we identified a loose connection within the wiring harness as the cause of the radar malfunction.
The conditions were challenging, with significant wave activity in the Kaiwi Channel, which lies between Oahu and Molokai, as well as in the notoriously treacherous Alenuihaha Channel, located between Maui and the Big Island. The waves posed considerable challenges, reaching heights that made navigation particularly demanding for the two of us.
Once we navigated past the most difficult portions, we slowed outside Kihei while considering a refueling stop. However, the fuel gauge indicated we still had half a tank, and our calculations suggested we would reach Wailoa without issues. Despite this assessment, we opted to continue, confident that our fuel reserves would suffice.
Unfortunately, this decision proved incorrect, as we ran out of fuel more than halfway through the Alenuihaha Channel. Maintaining a positive outlook despite the setback, we took all necessary safety precautions while awaiting assistance. We subsequently contacted the US Coast Guard, who promptly towed us back to their station in Kihei, Maui. Their quick response and professional expertise were invaluable in what could have been a dire situation. We extend our gratitude to these professionals for their exceptional service.
Reflecting on the day’s events, we have gained a renewed appreciation for the importance of meticulous preparation and thorough checks prior to setting sail.
